Environmental

From birth to potty your baby will use 4000- 6000 nappies. Using

disposable nappies, will have both a financial and environmental impact.

· Nappy laundry services are better than washing at home as the nappies

are washed in bulk, thereby further reducing the impact on the

environment.

· Real nappies are reused multiple times thus reducing the 2.6-4% of

landfill waste that is made up of disposable nappies. Disposable nappies

themselves can take 200-500 years to decompose completely.

· 8,000,000 disposable nappies are thrown into landfill sites EVERY DAY in

the UK, along with their contents...

· Using a liner in the real nappy, solid matter can be dropped straight into

the toilet and is treated with routine sewage. Using disposables places

raw sewage in landfills risking bacterial and viral contamination of our

rivers and streams.

· Using disposable nappies also increases methane output from landfill sites, which is a significant source of ‘greenhouse’ gases.

· 1 cup of crude oil is used to produce the plastic in 1 disposable nappy. Oil, as we all know, is a finite resource of the planet that is becoming more and more expensive, and will at some point in the future run out.

· It takes up to five large trees to make the pulp used in the disposables a child would use during his nappy wearing years. Trees help reduce greenhouse gases as they absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen. So unless the trees to produce the pulp are replaced through sustainable forestry, this will have another impact on the environment

· Save money. By using Real Nappies you could save between £400-900 during your child's nappy wearing days.

· It costs the taxpayer £40 million per year to deal with the end waste of disposable nappies. Real nappies do not end up in landfill so there is no direct end waste to dispose of.

· A well designed and therefore well fitting cotton nappy and wrap is far better at containing breast fed babies’ pooh than disposables.

· Better for your baby's skin. You wouldn’t use harsh chemicals on your face, so why expose your baby’s sensitive skin to them. Disposables use many chemicals which may be absorbed through the skin. As yet it is unknown what impact this may have on the long term health and fertility of babies wearing them. So in the mean time it may be better to avoid them, especially if there is a family history of eczema, asthma or allergies.

· There is the added benefit that children raised in real nappies are often potty trained months earlier, so reducing your financial costs even more. This is because disposables are sometimes too efficient. They can conceal dampness rather too well. The child doesn’t form the mental link between passing urine and the uncomfortable sensation of a damp nappy. Real nappies help to create this link which encourages progress to the next stage in toilet training.

· Our nappy laundry service is so convenient and easy to use that it gives you more time to spend with your family, rather than washing and drying your babies nappies.

By using a nappy laundry service, you can get the best of both worlds, as it combines the convenience of the disposable with the ecological benefits of the real nappies.
